The Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka, established in terms of the Act of Parliament No.74 of 1981 of the Democratic Socialistic Republic of Sri Lanka was ceremonially opened on the 22nd day of April 1982.

The Chancellor of Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka is appointed by His Excellency, the Executive President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka for a period of 2 years, as the Honorary Chief of the University.
The present Chancellor, appointed with effect from 16th January 2018, is Saddharmakeerthi Sri Thripitaka Visharada Aggamaha Pandita, Most Venerable Kotugoda Dhammawasa Mahanayake Thero, and the Supreme Patriarch Chairman of entire Amarapura Chapter.
Most Venerable Chancellor is the Chief Incumbent of Sri Dharmapalaramaya Temple, Mount Lavinia.
