1st Year Students Take an Educational Tour to the American Center
This January, 130 first year student visited the American Center. This is an educational institute under the guidance of the American Embassy.
The center is located near the embassy in the Galle Face area. When we arrived at the center, we had to go through the security door one by one. When we got inside, Mr. Sanjay Mailvahanan, the director of the information services warmly welcomed us and introduced us to a brief history of the center.
We then headed to a lecture hall where Mr. Mailvahanan explained what the American Center is and the various programs available. One of the programs we were most interested in was the E-Library program. A Rs 1000 fee will give us a life-time membership that will allow us to use all the resources in the E-Library including academic resources, journals, data bases, English Language Learning materials and more. This will be very useful for us during our academic career.
In addition to the e-Library, the American Center offers courses, lectures and films – all free of charge. We were particularly interested in the social media workshop and we are hoping to have te “Hi-Tech” bus on our campus one day.
After the presentations, we looked at the other facilities. Some used the computers and others looked though the book collection at the library. All the American Center staff members were very kind and helpful.
We really enjoyed our visit. Most of us had no idea about such a place. We all believe that if there were such centers everywhere in the world, no one would have to worry about their education.
