The First Degree programme starts with one year General Arts Qualifying Programme and the General Degree can be completed within two years and the Special Degree can be completed within three years.

Selection of subjects for the Degree Programme.

One of the following subjects can only be selected for the Special Degree Programme at the Faculty of Buddhist Studies. Buddhist Philosophy, Buddhist Culture and Archaeology. Comparative study of Philosophy and Religious studies can only be selected for the General Degree in Arts.

Pali Language and Literature or Sanskrit Language and Literature can only be selected for the Special Degree Programme at the faculty of Language Studies. Sinhala and English can be selected for the General Degree in Arts.

When selecting Buddhist Philosophy or Buddhist Culture for the Special Degree Programme the sub-subject(optional) should be Pali Language and Literature.

When selecting Archaeology for the Special Degree Programme the sub-subject(optional) subject should be Pali Language and Literature.

When selecting Pali Language and Literature for the Special Degree Programme the sub-subject (optional) subject should be Buddhist Culture or Buddhist Philosophy.

When selecting Sanskrit language and Literature for the Special Degree Programme the sub-subject (optional) subject should be Pali.

For the General Degree Exam in Arts the Pali Language and Literature is compulsory and one of the following subjects should be selected. Either Buddhist Philosophy or Buddhist Culture.

The Special Arts Degree programs are conducted only on the subjects of Pali, Buddhist Philosophy, Buddhist Culture, Archaeology and Sanskrit. If a student reads the subject of Pali for his special degree it is compulsory to study Buddhist Philosophy or Buddhist Culture, if the subjects of Buddhist Philosophy, Buddhist Culture, Archaeology and Sanskrit are studied for the Special Arts Degree, it is compulsory to read Pali as the supplementary subject.

The undergraduates who register under the Special Sanskrit entrance should continue to study Sanskrit up to the end of the study program. The subject of Sanskrit should be studied for the Special Arts Degree as well.

The students in their 2nd, 3rd and 4th years may select during one year, two of the following subjects:-

  1. The Diploma study program on Buddhist Counseling (Only those students who receive “A” or “B” passes in Buddhist Counseling during the First Year Examination, can study this subject).
  2. The Certificate study course on English Language
  3. The Higher Certificate study course on English (Only those students who receive “A” or “B” passes for the certificate study course on English can study for this course of study)
  4. The Certificate course of study on Computer Use (Only for the students of the 3rd and 4th years)
  5. The Certificate Course of Study on the Tamil Language
  6. The Certificate Course of Study on the Hindi Language
  7. The Certificate Course of Study on the Korean Language
  8. The Certificate Course of Study on the Japanese Language
  9. The Certificate Course of Study on the German Language
  10. The Certificate Course of Study on the Chinese Language

The first year students are not permitted to register themselves for any of the certificate course of study.
